This backyard project in San Luis Obispo, CA focused on removing a large lawn and creating an art studio and an inviting outdoor space for entertainment. After lawn removal, a small wooden stand-alone structure was built on a concrete pad and was finished inside and out, providing a space separate from the house for the client to work on her art. Square concrete pavers were installed connecting the existing concrete patio to both art studio entrances, and the joints were filled with black Mexican pebble. Raised vegetable beds were built and a new, much smaller lawn was installed, along with several fruit trees. Exterior lighting was installed and pea gravel was used for the mulch material. Finishing touches included perennial and succulent planters, and the clients' existing fire ring and chairs were used to create a cozy gathering space.
