This San Luis Obispo, CA space was transformed from an outdated front walkway with tired plantings and lots of wasted space, to an entry courtyard with modern features and plenty of room to enjoy them. A steel and reclaimed redwood pergola provides shade and screening for the master bedroom, and frames the custom-designed and built water feature. Jasmine vines are supported on a matching steel-frame trellis with stainless steel cable, turning a blank wall into a green backdrop. A new paver patio provides an open transition from the entry gate to the front door, and encourages prolonged use the space instead of just passing through. The existing block planter wall was extended and minimal border plantings were installed to soften up the edges of the hardscape. A finishing touch of low-voltage LED lighting welcomes visitors and makes the courtyard usable for evening entertainment.
